The ‘messy middle’ is where many women’s careers stall. It’s the stage when caregiving collides with ambition, often leading to burnout, slow progression or an early exit from the industry. For too long, businesses have treated this as a women’s issue when it’s an issue for everyone.
Managing Partner at Livity, Tarin Ayres, argues it’s time to rewrite the script. Women now make up the majority of the workforce, yet unless caregiving is reframed as a shared responsibility, businesses risk losing the very people who could drive future growth.
Employers need to build structures that support all parents. Progress on diversity will remain fragile without equitable parental leave, flexible working and genuine cultural change to keep talent in the room. The stakes are high for individuals, but even higher for agencies and the industry.
